Music Award Maastricht 2026 – A Celebration of Vocal Music Inspired by Love

Young, talented vocalists from around the world have gathered at Conservatorium Maastricht to pursue their passion for singing. This year, four exceptional finalists take centre stage at the Music Award Maastricht 2026, where the beauty and power of the human voice meet the theme of Love. Let yourself be carried away by captivating vocal performances that explore the many shades of love, from tender intimacy to passionate intensity.

Biography
Devon Baird is a South African bass from KwaZulu-Natal, emerging as a distinctive new voice in opera. He graduated from the University of Pretoria in 2023 with a Bachelor of Music in Opera Performance, earning a Distinction in Classical Voice as well as the prestigious Mimi Coertse Bursary.
Devon recently performed the role of Poeta in La Prova di un’opera seria by Florian Leopold Gassmann, further establishing his presence on the operatic stage. He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree at Conservatorium Maastricht in the Netherlands, where he continues to refine his vocal technique and broaden his performance experience.

Biography
Francisca Djacabi is a young Portuguese singer driven by a deep passion for musical performance. Up to date, she has performed in several countries such as Spain, Portugal, The Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. Currently, she is finishing her Bachelor of Music at Conservatorium Maastricht under the vocal guidance of Susanne Schimmack. 
Francisca started her performing career in Portugal, in 2022, with the Ensemble Záve at the ZêzereArts Summer Festival. Since moving to The Netherlands, she often collaborates with her peers at Conservatorium Maastricht, having participated in student composed operas, vocal ensembles and solo recitals. In the season of 2023/2024, she ventured onto the operatic stages and started performing as part of the Extra-Chor in Theater Aachen (Germany). She’s taken part in productions such as “Il Viaggio a Reims” by Rossini, “Sweeney Todd” by Sondheim and “Oprhée aux Enfers” by Offenbach. Later on, she joined the choir of Opera Zuid and has sung in productions such as “Le Villi” by Puccini and “Die Dreigroschenoper” by Weill. As an opera soloist, Francisca has taken on the roles of Sandmännchen in “Hänsel und Gretel”, by Humperdick, and Isaura in “Tancredi”, by Rossini.

Biography
Andrea Palomo Alcántara (Málaga, 2002) is a 24-year-old soprano with a strong artistic identity and a particular affinity for Bel Canto and Zarzuela repertoire.  
She began her vocal studies at the age of 12 at the Manuel Carra Conservatory under the guidance of Pedro Barrientos, laying the foundations of a solid vocal technique and musical sensitivity. 
In 2019, she was selected to participate in the Galamian Academy, where she further developed her artistic skills working with Nils Nilsen and Sergio Montero. Throughout her training, Andrea has enriched her musical development through masterclasses with renowned artists such as Celia Alcedo, Paul Smith, Gloria Fabuela, Miquel Ortega, and Albert Alcaraz. 
Andrea is currently in her second year of a Master’s degree in Classical Singing at the Conservatorium Maastricht, studying with Susanne Schimmack. She is deeply committed to refining her vocal technique, stylistic awareness, and expressive freedom, with a repertoire that reflects both technical precision and emotional depth. 
Her performances are characterized by musical clarity, expressive nuance, and a strong communicative presence, aiming to create an immediate and sincere connection with the audience.

Biography
Mar Pino-Charlez is a Catalan soprano celebrated for her versatile artistry, which spans a wide repertoire from early music to contemporary works, with a particular focus on the Romantic period. A recent graduate of the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, Mar is currently pursuing her Master’s program at the Conservatory of Maastricht, studying under Susanne Schimmack.  
Mar’s unique path blends artistic excellence with intellectual rigor; she previously graduated with honors from the Municipal Conservatory of Barcelona while also pursuing an academic degree in Physics. Her extensive vocal background began at age 14, following training in violin and choral singing.  
Her performance career has taken her across Catalonia, Italy, and the Netherlands. Recent highlights include the compelling role of the Governess in The Turn of the Screw (conducted by Jac van Steen) and Saffo with the Amsterdam Opera Choir. With an impressive repertoire of works by Puccini, Strauss, Britten, and several living composers, Mar continues to cultivate a dynamic international career, captivating audiences with her technical skill and expressive voice.  

The Jury

Paul McNamara (Chairman)

Biography
From Ireland, the tenor Paul McNamara is based in The Netherlands where he is Artistic Leader of the Dutch National Opera Academy, the collaborative master’s in opera performance offered by the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in partnership with the Royal Conservatoire The Hague. 
The tenor has appeared in opera houses throughout Germany and Austria performing roles such as Wagner’s Claudio (Das Liebesverbot), Erik, Tannhäuser, Loge, Tristan, Siegfried, Mime and Parsifal. In addition to operas by Berg, Braunfels, Schillings, Schreker, Strauss, Korngold and Zemlinsky, his extensive repertoire also includes work by Cavalli, Monteverdi, Mozart, Weber, Meyerbeer, Leoncavallo, Tchaikowsky, Janáček, Britten, Previn, Penderecki and John Adams. 
He has been heard at major venues including Venice’s Teatro La Fenice, Teatr Wielki – the Polish National Opera in Warsaw, the Teatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro, the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, Opéra national du Rhin and with the Salzburg Festival at the Beijing Music Festival. A keen recitalist, concert appearances have taken him to many of the world’s leading venues including the Berlin Philharmonie, the Pierre Boulez Saal Berlin, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and New York’s Carnegie Hall as well as to the Telemann Festival in Hamburg with Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin. 
An alumnus of the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Paul McNamara is an honours graduate of the University College Cork, the Cork School of Music and the Royal College of Music London. He is a casting consultant for the Stichting Omroep Muziek (Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra & Choir) and Opera Adviser to the Arts Council of Ireland (An Chomhairle Ealaíon).

Waut Koeken

Artistic and General Manager of Opera Zuid Maastricht, Stage director 

Biography
Waut Koeken studied Art History at the Ghent University and Philosophyin Antwerp and Louvain. His first full-scale production was an adaptation for children of Mozart’s Magic Flute, created for Zomer-Opera-Alden-Biesen, invited by La Monnaie, the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg 
and the Flanders Opera. He successfully directed some operasby Offenbach: L’Île de Tulipatan, Bataclan, Barbe-Bleue, La Princesse de Trébizonde and La Vie parisienne, which earned him a nomination as “Director of the year” by the magazine Opernwelt. Amongst his youngest productions: La Bohème co-produced by Opera Zuid Maastricht and Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg. Since 2017-18, Waut is Artistic and General Manager of Opera Zuid Maastricht. Under his leadership, the company won the “Opera of the Year 2022 ” award in the Netherlands with the production Lady in the Dark and again in 2024 with the production Bluebeards Castle. In 2020 Waut won the Schaunard Award for his leadership and creativity in this COVID-19 year. 

Fenna Ograjensek

Biography
Soprano Fenna Ograjensek has been heard with opera companies in the Netherlands and abroad. Her concerts have taken her to major concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, and the Philharmonie Berlin. 
As a cultural connector, Fenna is committed to using her talents to contribute to a vibrant cultural life in the region where she lives. From the very beginning, she has been the artistic director of Zomerfestival Voerendaal, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2025. In 2018, together with Sybrand van der Werf, she founded the opera company Opera Compact, for which she serves as managing director and appeared on stage as Leonore (Fidelio), Agathe (Der Freischütz), and Titania (The Fairy Queen). 
Together with pianist Robert Weirauch, she presented several recital programmes, including Die Goldenen Zwanziger and Hommage to Bernstein. This season, Onweerstaanbaar is on the agenda. 
Fenna is a graduate of the Maastricht Conservatory and The Juilliard School, New York. For year’s she was coached by Gemma Visser. She has collaborated with conductors such as Laurence Cummings, Ed Spanjaard, Masaaki Suzuki, Bernhard Kontarsky, Steward Robertson, Jan Stulen, Robert Hollingworth, Steuart Bedford, PerOtto Johansson, Enrico Delamboye, Maurice Luttikhuis, Stefan Veselka, and many others. 
Last season she appeared as CioCio San in Madama Butterfly, and next season she will perform the role of Micaëla in the opera Carmen. 

Aäron Wajnberg  

Biography
Praised for his expressive depth and musical insight, pianist Aaron Wajnberg is recognized as one of the leading pianists of his generation. He has performed at major international venues including Carnegie Hall, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Kölner Philharmonie, BOZAR Brussels, Teatro Municipal Rio de Janeiro, the Antwerp Opera House, the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich. 
Renowned as a Lieder pianist, Wajnberg collaborates regularly with some of today’s most distinguished singers, among them Jeanine De Bique, Rolando Villazón, Roberto Alagna, Ian Bostridge, Christoph Prégardien, Sophie Karthäuser, Chen Reiss, Pumeza Matshikiza, Samantha Hankey, Christianne Stotijn and Charlotte Wajnberg. As a chamber musician, he has worked with artists such as Michael Barenboim, Annelien Van Wauwe and Roman Patocka, as well as ensembles including Quatuor Danel and Quatuor Enesco. 
He is a frequent accompanist for international masterclasses and was an official pianist at the Queen Elisabeth Competition for Voice in 2018 and 2023. In 2023, he was personally invited by Renée Fleming to participate in Carnegie Hall’s SongStudio. 
A graduate magna cum laude of the Royal Antwerp Conservatoire, Wajnberg studied with Leonid Margarius, Victor Makarov and Levente Kende. Alongside his performing career, he is Professor at the Royal Antwerp Conservatoire, co-Artistic Director of Flanders LiedFest, and since 2025 Artistic Director of the Municipal Conservatory of Mechelen.

The Pianist

Lionel Bams (Pianist)

Lionel Bams obtained his piano diplomas at the Conservatories of Liège and Brussels. In addition to the study of counterpoint, fugue and chamber music, he soon specialized in the accompaniment of singers. Passionate about the voice, he attended several masterclasses, at the invitation of Udo Reinemann, in Amsterdam, Brussels and at the Franz Schubert Institute in Vienna. Finally, in Germany, in the class of the famous Irwin Gage, he obtained the concert diploma for Song with the highest distinction. 

As a concert pianist, he has performed at the Centre for Fine Arts, the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie and Flagey in Brussels, France and Japan, among others, with partners of the highest level. In addition to his stage activities, Lionel is an accompanist and vocal coach at the Brussels Conservatory and at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel alongside Sophie Koch and Stéphane Degout. SinceJanuary he has been responsible for the song class here at the Maastricht Conservatory. 

Lionel recorded several chamber music works on CD, including the complete Mélodies by the composer Albert Huybrechts (Cypres).  

The Presenters

Teodora Drozdik-Popović & Luke Mitchell (Presentation)

Tonight’s event will be presented by two familiar faces from Conservatorium Maastricht, both closely connected to the world of vocal music. Teodora Drozdik-Popović is an active mezzo-soprano and Research Supervisor at Conservatorium Maastricht, while Luke Mitchell originally trained as a classical singer before moving into a role as project leader Jazz and Music in Education at the conservatoire.

Together, they share a strong connection to the vocal field from both onstage and behind the scenes, making them a fitting duo to guide us through this evening.
