Music in the Making: SongWednesday 13 December 2017, 16:30
Before Schubert, songs were mainly sung in pubs, or among soldiers. Nowadays, the word 'song' evokes the image of a glittering diva, casually leaning on a concert grand, and the singing seems framed in sacred silence.
If we take a closer look at Schubert and Schumann's songs, the freedom of form in the compositions is particularly striking: the composers really arranged the music around concentrated poetic texts. Form is content.
During this Song Project, students and a mixed team of teaching staff have focused on the intertwining of words and music, and created their own songs.
