Women in Jazz: Amy Antin and Shannon Barnett9 February & 27 February
Women have been involved with jazz since its inception, but all too often their achievements are not as well-known or trumpeted, so to speak, as those of their male counterparts. That is why the Jazz Department is very excited to welcome two talented jazz women who both will be giving an inspiring masterclass: singer Amy Antin and trombonist Shannon Barnett!
Shannon Barnett is a versatile Australian trombonist, vocalist and composer. In early 2014, she moved to Cologne, Germany, to take up the position of 2nd Trombone with the WDR Big Band after spending several years in New York City where she performed with the likes of Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, Pedro Giraudo, Cyrille Aimée, Cecile McLorin Salvant, the Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra of New York and where she was a regular member of the Birdland Big Band.
In 2010, Barnett released her debut album as a leader, entitled 'Country', on the Which Way Music label. The recording also features Christopher Hale (acoustic bass guitar), Nashua Lee (electric guitar) and Ben Hendry (drums), and was nominated for Best Jazz Album in the 2010 AIR Awards and Best Jazz Recording in the 2011 ABC Limelight Awards.
In addition to her big band work and writing and performing with her own German quartet, Shannon regularly performs internationally in the early jazz/swing scene, with artists like La Section Rhythmique and Ragstretch.
Barnett has become an important contributor to the Australian music scene, performing in ensembles including Vada, The Bamboos, The Black Arm Band, The Vampires, the Bennetts Lane Big Band and as a guest with the Andrea Keller Quartet, on the 2004 ABC Jazz release Angels and Rascals. Barnett has also appeared with the Australian Art Orchestra, Barney McAll's Mother of Dreams and Secrets feat. Kurt Rosenwinkel, Charlie Haden, Flap! and the Paul Grabowsky Sextet, and from 2009-2010, she worked as a multi-instrumentalist and composer with the contemporary circus group Circus Oz.
Amy Antin is an international visual artist, singer-songwriter and lyricist. Born in New York, USA, Amy lives and works in Cologne, Germany, since 1990 where she recorded and produced several albums as a singer-songwriter and where her artwork was shown in several solo expositions.
