Arjan Tien (born 1968), winner of the first prize 'Rotary-Faller' in the competition of the international masterclass in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, in 1997, is considered one of the most versatile conductors of his generation. As an opera conductor, he was invited by companies including Gauteng Opera (Johannesburg, South-Africa), Wermland Opera (Karlstad, Sweden), Opera Zuid, Nederlandse Reisopera and Opera Spanga, where he conducted productions such as Verdi’s La Traviata; Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana; Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and La Bohème; Rossini’s La Cenerentola; Kurt Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins and Marie Galante; Mozart’s Cosi fan Tutte and Die Zauberflöte; Bizet’s Carmen; Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas; Menotti’s The Medium and the world premiere of Krüs’ God’s Videotheek.

Tien studied Violin and Viola at the Utrechts Conservatorium, graduating with distinction as a Performing Musician in 1994. He made his solo debut as a violist with the Salzburg Chamber Soloists during a tour of South-America in Sao Paulo and Vitoria (Brazil). He was the solo violist of the National Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands, and was appointed as a violist in the Dutch Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in 1992.

From 1999 to 2001 he worked as an assistant conductor for the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, and in 2006 he was appointed Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Magogo Chamber Orchestra, where he was responsible for 15 to 20 adventurous and innovative programmes per season until his departure in 2012.

Arjan Tien has had CDs and DVDs released by labels including DECCA records, Universal Music, Sony BMG-Heita Records and Brilliant Classics, in a very broad repertoire ranging from Mozart, Brahms, Puccini, Prokofiev and Sibelius to rarely recorded composers such as Karayev, Amirov and Spohr.

He has been invited as a guest conductor with ensembles including the WDR Funkhaus Orchester, Residentie Orkest, Radio Filharmonisch Orkest, philharmonie zuidnederland, Orkest van het Oosten, Gelders Orkest, Noord Nederlands Orkest, Metropole Orkest, Bilkent Symphony Orchestra, Antalya Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Symphonique de Bienne, KwaZulu Philharmonic, Cape Town Philharmonic, Chamber Orchestra of South Africa, Johannesburg Philharmonic and the Belgrade Philharmonic, and performed in Belgium, Germany, Finland, Greece, Great Britain, Hungary, Indonesia, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Serbia-Montenegro, Spain, Turkey, South-Africa, Sweden and Switzerland.

Arjan Tien teaches Orchestral Conducting as a main subject at Conservatorium Maastricht and Conservatorium Tilburg and conducts the Atheneum Chamber Orchestra at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.
