Jan van den Boomen (born 1959) has taught Double Bass, Bass Guitar, Methodology and Combo in the Jazz/Pop department of Conservatorium Maastricht since 1987.
He studied Classical Double Bass at Conservatorium Maastricht, and continued his studies with Italian double bass virtuoso Francesco Petracchi. He has performed with nearly all symphony orchestras in the Netherlands, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He has played in various bands, ad hoc ensembles, and projects, and with well-known performers and ensembles including the Nieuw Ensemble, De Volharding, The Ebony Band, Herman van Veen, Erik Vloeimans, Charles Green, Pierre Courbois, Dick de Graaf, Vera Vingerhoeds, Paul van Kemenade, Ab Baars, Leo van Oostrom, Rob van Kreeveld, John Ruocco, and many others.
In 1997 he set up his own ensemble, J.A.N. - Jazz Appeals Now. Guest soloists with his initiative have included Eef Albers, Joep van Leeuwen, Tom Beek, Fred Berkemeijer, Alexander Beets, Peter Berk, Max Boeree, Ruud Breuls, Ad Colen, Ineke van Doorn, Ronald Douglas, Konkie Halmeyer, Jilt Jansma, Janice Lakers, Louis Lanzing, Bart van Lier, Nico Nijholt, Jeroen Pek, Peter Peuker, Raymond van Spiegel, Francien van Tuinen and Angelo Verploegen.
Van den Boomen is the regular bassist of the Amersfoort big band On the Move. He performs as a duo with singer Simone Honijk. He was one of the initiators of Stichting Limburg Geïmproviseerde Muziek (SLIM, foundation for improvised music in Limburg), and founder, chair and programmer of Jazzpodium Amersfoort. Since 2013, he has also formed a duo with guitarist Sander Hop, known, among other things, from Raise the Roof. Since 2002, he has also been teaching Double Bass at the music schools of Amersfoort and Utrecht.
