Hans Nickel

Hans Nickel (born 1958) is a lecturer of Tuba and Euphonium at Conservatorium Maastricht. In addition, he teaches Tuba and Euphonium at the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf, the Orchesterzentrum NRW Dortmund and at the Ausbildungsmusikkorps der Bundeswehr, Germany. He regularly works as a guest lecturer in educational institutions around the world.

Specific admission requirements

  • Scales and chords: major and minor scales up to three sharps and three flats, over a four-octave range, including broken triads.
  • Etudes: perform three etudes of contrasting character, for example: Burgmüller : Opus 100
  • Polyphonic: several short pieces, Bach or a piece of equal difficulty: Kleine Preludien und Fugen: simple 2-piece Inventionen, B. Bartók : Mikrokosmos, Vol 2 or 3
  • Recital pieces:
    • perform a blues piece
    • perform two recital pieces from the standard jazz repertoire (The Real Book)
    • perform a jazz transcription
    • improvise a simple variation
  • Prima Vista: prima vista playing to a satisfactory standard (jazz-specific)
