Conservatorium Maastricht cherishes its talent. Not just the students who choose to pursue a career in music after secondary school, but certainly also younger students who show an exceptional aptitude for music. Boys and girls with perfect pitch, a great sense of rhythm or skilled finger dexterity. These are children who may develop a real talent and who show great promise for the future. We would like to invite those students - and we hope you are one of them - to study with us and take advantage of the individualised lesson programme we will set up together.
In addition to your regular school day, you will receive coaching at Conservatorium Maastricht - in the Classical Music or Jazz department - and have weekly tailor-made music lessons. These include theory and ensemble playing, as well as group and individual lessons from main subject teachers in your instrument of choice. You will be expected to study a lot at home. This is necessary if you want to keep up with this high level. Before you are admitted, you will have to take a test to assess your level.

Are you in love with music and your instrument, and are you preparing for a future in music?
The Jazz School of the Junior Conservatorium...
...is one of the finest preliminary courses for Jazz and Contemporary music in The Netherlands. Our jazz building in the centre of Maastricht, in the centre of the Euregion, situates us in a vibrant, fertile and international location for your musical education and development to achieve its full potential.
At the Jazz School, we offer cutting edge lessons with experienced young professionals every Saturday. In addition, you will prepare for the entrance exam of our Bachelor's program in jazz.
In the vast web of ‘Western' musical genres Pop, Rock, RnB, Rap, Soul, Funk, Blues, etc. Jazz is methodically the ideal music to get acquainted with all these styles.
Jazz has many liberties compared to other styles of music. After all, you improvise and create! You compose and build a personal sound. This requires a great and thorough knowledge of the structure of jazz music and its building blocks. You will take that structure apart and learn to build it back up to make a musical sculpture of your own.
APPLICATION DATE: 17 june. MORE INFO WILL FOLLOW SOON!
When you apply, we will first arrange an introductory meeting and a (free) trial lesson with one of our teachers to see if you're up to the job.
The course includes lessons such as:
Band, Jazz theory in Context (J-TIC), A Life in Music, Free Improvisation and Voice Training, which support the individual development of each student: Alongside 28 weeks of group lessons you will receive 10 individual lessons. The Junior Jazz conservatorium is fundamentally a performance school. Students will spend most of their time playing or singing.
This is the Jazz Performance Ensemble. You study repertoire and prepare for a concert with a coach, working on every aspect of jazz music imaginable; timing & phrasing, form, comping, voicings, improvisation, dynamics, and so on.
Jazz-TIC: Jazz Theory in Context
In this lesson you will be exploring the theoretical structure of Jazz Music in a hands-on way. Discovering the harmonic and melodic “spices” of Jazz and training aural skills are the core elements of this lesson.
In this class you will learn how ‘free’ free improvisation is and how to build up a piece of music from scratch. You will be playing with the “skeleton” of music, with all its bones and joints as its musical elements.
The single most important aspect of jazz music may well be it’s rhythm. In this lesson we will cover the basics of this music, you will learn about the miraculous phenomenon “swing”, you will study frequently used riffs and patterns, improve your sight reading skills, analyse tunes, etc. Using your arms, hands, fingers, legs, feet, head and voice!
Whether you are a vocalist or an instrumentalist, singing is the perfect way to experience what music is really about. After all, the voice is the only instrument that is also a body part! In this course you will learn to use your voice to support your musical development. You will practise basic techniques, sing together and gain awareness of harmony, melody, rhythm and dynamics using this wonderful instrument.
A Life in Music
This course puts your musical performance in a historical and cultural context. We will talk about the origin of jazz and broaden your scope on music as culture and the professional field.
Finding your way through the enormous amount of musical styles and enlarging your personal preferences is not that easy. In this lesson you will find and exchange new ways of searching for unknown music.
4 periods of 7 weeks on Saturdays between 10:00 - 14:00 from September till May, and therefore does not clash with secondary school timetables or school holidays. It is possible to join in later.
The Jazz School caters for both secondary school students from the age of around 15 and up and for students who want to apply for the Bachelor's degree programme.
The programme strives to cooperate with private and music school teachers, and with secondary education, as much as possible.
