Classical Composition

The Composition Department at Conservatorium Maastricht brings together a diverse group of young composers working with music as contemporary sound art under the guidance of Vykintas Baltakas. While individual artistic development is central, the programme places strong emphasis on collective exchange and collaborative practice. Students from different musical, cultural and artistic backgrounds are encouraged to engage in critical dialogue, experiment with new ideas and challenge established perspectives.

Through initiatives such as Music Lab and Meet the Composer, the department develops alternative formats for discussion, presentation and artistic research. Composition is approached not simply as craft, but as an active and exploratory practice connected to the wider cultural field. Students participate in projects both within and beyond the conservatoire environment, often in collaboration with professional ensembles, festivals and institutions.

The department maintains close relationships with leading cultural partners in the region, including Philharmonie Zuidnederland, Musica Sacra, Centre Henri Pousseur and Ensemble 88, offering students direct engagement with contemporary professional practice.
