Two works from the exciting era around the turn of the century, or the “Fin du Siecle” Debussy’s prelude originally composed in 1894, and Mahler’s 4th symphony in 1899/1900.

The Society for Private Musical Performances was founded by Arnold Schönberg in the 1910’s to provide composers an opportunity to hear important scores of the day in an environment that was conducive to developing a deeper understanding of the musical tools and innovations of the era. Among the leading musicians in this circle were, of course, Arnold Schoenberg, his famous students Berg and Webern and other leading composers and arrangers working in and around Vienna, notably Erwin Stein.

Due to the unfortunate and long-lasting COVID-19 period, we were forced to reprogram our concert season, to still give students the possibility to play some ‘ important scores’ and develop a ‘deeper understanding of this era’ . These beautiful arrangements by Schönberg and Stein give them exactly the originally intended opportunity to get more intimately acquainted with this repertoire.
