Facilities

Conservatorium Maastricht offers practice rooms, concert halls, a recording studio and a music library, so you can practise, rehearse, record and perform as part of your studies.

Concert Halls

The Classical Department and the Jazz and Music in Education Department each have their own concert halls, used for student recitals, ensemble performances, examinations, projects and professional concerts.

The Classical Department has two halls: the Willem Hijstek Hall (ground floor) and the Matty Niël Hall (fourth floor), both with acoustics suited to classical music. The Jazz and Music in Education Department has the Concert Hall Wyck (ground floor), a versatile space ideally suited to jazz and pop music.

All halls have a professional PA system, lighting, and sound and recording facilities, so you gain experience in both live performance and recording. Steinway grand pianos are available at all locations.

Study places

Students can use the music library, many practice and rehearsal rooms with a wide range of instruments and equipment (including Steinway pianos), the concert halls and a recording studio. Soundproof practice rooms are open in the evenings and throughout the weekend. There are also computer workstations with standard music software and access to Moodle. Jazz and Music in Education students have guitar, bass and keyboard amplifiers and a PA system at their disposal.

Need extra space? You can also use the music practice booths at Centre Céramique, which have pianos, music stands and a wide selection of sheet music, or the studios at the Muziekgieterij. Organ lessons take place in the Maastricht Basilica of Our Lady or the Basilica of Saint Servatius at the Vrijthof.

Library

The library is on the third floor of the Classical Department. The Jazz and Music in Education Department has its own collection for Music in Education. The library is open to students, lecturers and staff. Your student card is also your library card, and loans are free of charge.

Through the Music LibGuide you can search the catalogue and use all online resources from anywhere. It is the main starting point for music research and brings together print and digital resources, including digital journals and specialist databases.

Students and staff have free access to, among others, Oxford Music Online, Nkoda, Donemus, the International Journal of Music Education and Qwest TV.

Studio

Whether you study Classical Music, Jazz or Music in Education, you can use our professional recording studio for auditions, projects and productions.

The studio is equipped with recording technology and microphones, including an Avid Pro Tools HDX system with a 32 fader mixing console, a setup used as an industry standard worldwide. You gain practical experience in a studio environment, try out different recording techniques, and learn to edit and mix while recording. A direct audio link between the studio and the concert hall also makes live recordings possible.

Digital Community of Practice (DICOP)

DICOP is a group of staff members, teachers and students who support digital innovation in teaching and learning. Its aim is to develop and improve blended learning, the streaming of events and classes, and other educational technology within the conservatoire.

DICOP also offers short courses and workshops for students in video post production, audio mixing, camera use, video recording and streaming, and audio recording.

Students and employees can contact DICOP for support with blended learning (including Prowise screens, Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Moodle), streaming classes and events (with on site support or guidance on doing it yourself), advice on hardware and equipment, and general questions, ideas or suggestions about digital teaching and learning.
