Health & Wellbeing
Your wellbeing is just as important as your musical development. Conservatorium Maastricht offers health, wellbeing and support services to help you thrive, personally and professionally, throughout your studies.
Health and Wellbeing Programme
The Health and Wellbeing programme helps students build the skills and awareness for a healthy, sustainable career as a professional musician. It is part of the Orientation on Profession course and consists of workshops, training sessions and information activities on physical and mental wellbeing.
Studying music and performance are demanding, and stress, fatigue, anxiety and burnout are common among musicians. The programme therefore focuses strongly on mental health, mindfulness and resilience. In theoretical and practical sessions you learn how to care for your body and mind, maintain vocal and physical health, and perform sustainably.
Topics may include mindfulness, yoga, stage fright, ergonomics, injury prevention through the Mensendieck method and voice and physiotherapy topics. They help you prevent common health problems and build habits that support a long career.
Hey, Are You Okay?
Conservatorium Maastricht is a diverse and multicultural community. Music connects our students and staff, and we value the different perspectives, norms and values everyone brings from their own cultural background.
Ideas about what is normal, inappropriate or unacceptable behaviour can differ between cultures and individuals. Music education is close and personal, with many one to one lessons and intensive collaboration. That is one of our strengths, but it also brings responsibilities. Whatever your background, the Code of Conduct applies to everyone, and we keep developing our approach to social safety.
Our aim is a safe, supportive and respectful environment where everyone can focus on their musical and artistic development. Several measures and support systems help students and staff feel comfortable, protected and heard.
Code of Conduct
The Code of Conduct sets out the values and expectations for respectful, safe and responsible behaviour at Conservatorium Maastricht. It covers principles of social safety, definitions of undesirable behaviour, guidance for difficult situations, possible consequences of violations, contact details and useful links. It supports professionalism and mutual respect between students and teachers.
Social Safety Sessions
Dialogue is essential when discussing social safety, so we organise Social Safety Sessions for students about how the Code of Conduct works in practice. In these sessions you can talk with fellow students, discuss real dilemmas and ask questions, anonymously if you prefer. Sessions for staff members will follow.
Who to turn to for help
We offer several support services throughout your studies, whether you need guidance on academic choices, personal wellbeing or professional advice.
- The study coach is your first point of contact for questions related to your studies, guidance and practical matters. They can also help you find the right person or service if needed.
- The Head of Programme can advise you on study related matters and available options within Conservatorium Maastricht and Zuyd University of Applied Sciences.
- Student counsellors are available to support you with study related or personal challenges, such as financial issues or short term psychological support.
- Student psychologists offer professional support for mental health related concerns. You can be referred via a teacher, study coach or student counsellor, or contact them directly to make an appointment.
- Confidential advisors are available if you experience or are affected by unwanted behaviour such as discrimination, bullying or intimidation. They will listen, advise and guide you through possible next steps.
- Hey, Are You Okay Group. If you simply need someone to talk to someone, you can reach out to a trained student listener. This peer support option provides a first listening ear and can help guide you towards the right support services if needed. More information about the Hey, Are You Okay Group will be shared soon.
