About the Curriculum

The Music in Education programme is built from four teaching units. Unit I focuses on musical upbringing and education: subject didactics, educational theory, music and movement, arts education (CKV) and special needs pedagogy. Unit II builds theoretical knowledge and skills, through a theory studio, ear training and Music in Context. Unit III shapes your musical craftsmanship: voice, piano or guitar, band, choir and music technology. Unit IV consists of broad, practice based projects: internships, project week, a band project, a song project, a performance project and your graduation project.

As the programme progresses, you connect these four units more and more closely. Combined with your own choices and specialisation, that shapes your unique profile as a music teacher.

The foundation year has a broad base and core curriculum. In year 2, the main phase, you develop through teaching activities, projects and internships. Year 3 is the specialisation phase, where you choose MIK or OMB as your main specialisation. In year 4, the graduation phase, you deepen your studies further, at your own pace.

About the Specialisations

From your specialisation phase onward, you choose a main direction that matches the kind of impact you want to make: Music in Arts Education (MIK) or Orthopedagogical Music Practice (OMB). Both deepen your craftsmanship, but each with its own focus on where, and for whom, you put it to use.

Orthopedagogical Music Practice (OMB) The profession increasingly calls for teachers with specific orthopedagogical and didactic qualities, especially in primary and secondary (special needs) education. With the OMB specialisation, you're prepared for that from day one. You become an equal partner in the multidisciplinary consultations of school and institution care teams, and you actively contribute to identifying, understanding and addressing issues within a group or class. That's what makes a music teacher with OMB unique: you connect music, pedagogy and care in a way offered nowhere else in the Netherlands.

Music in Arts Education (MIK) Choose MIK, and you develop the expertise to apply music education from a historical and stylistic context, both inside and outside the classroom. Subjects such as CKV, cultural education and General Arts are explored in depth, and progression into the Master's in Art and Education is built into the curriculum from the start. After graduating, you can work as a music consultant or music education officer at an arts organisation, or as the connecting link between education and the region's cultural offer.
