Olga Reznichenko ft. Fringe Orchestra presents "Elegie"
Fringe Orchestra is the annual crossover orchestra project of Conservatorium Maastricht. Composed of top students and alumni of Conservatorium Maastricht, each edition is tailor-made for a new guest soloist. This is done under the direction of artistic director Jesse Passenier, who both conducts the formation and arranges for it.

Past editions have resulted in crossovers between a big band, a classical ensemble, and an electric band, and Fringe Orchestra's plans are to keep reinventing itself. The orchestra feels at home on stage, having shared it last season with high-profile Catalan trumpeter-singer Andrea Motis. Before that, it did so with Dutch melodic saxophonist Kika Sprangers, inventive Belgian drummer Lander Gyselinck (known from the formation STUFF) and brilliant French vocalist Camille Bertault. Previous editions have included multiple collaborations with turntablist DJ Vindictiv, trumpeter Carlo Nardozza, saxophonists Frank Deruytter and Reiner Witzel, Bex Burch on the gyil (Ghanaian xylophone) and electronic music performer Paul Frick, showcasing a style range from jazz and funk, to world music, chanson, electro and hip-hop. Fringe Orchestra dares, chafes, overwhelms and inspires. The frontier is where it happens.

Pianist Olga Reznichenko, well known from the Cologne jazz scene, stands out for her virtuosity, power and complexity in harmony and rhythm. Her intuitive style makes her react instinctively to musical stimuli. The urge to ram her instrument with all her might - almost as if to destroy it - is as strong as finding pleasure in softer, quieter sounds. Her compositions also reflect her distinctive sense of aesthetics.

Programme:

  • 19:30 – 20:00: Doors open
  • 20:00 – 21:30: Olga Reznichenko ft. Fringe Orchestra

More about Olga Reznichenko
Jazz pianist and composer Olga Reznichenko explores the extremes of inspiration with inexhaustible energy. Her intuitive playing style is characterised by an instinctive response to musical stimuli: the urge to play fiercely and uncompromisingly on her instrument - almost as if to dismantle it - is as natural to her as seeking pleasure in softer, more hushed timbres. Reznichenko's eponymous trio unites complex harmonic and rhythmic structures with a simple, almost minimalist texture and accessible melodies. Her compositions also reflect her distinct sense of aesthetics. They usually arise from improvisation and accommodate Reznichenko's unfiltered, intuitive enthusiasm for musical expression, allowing her to unlock her full creative potential. Reznichenko's pieces, which usually stem from improvisation, give space to her unfiltered enthusiasm for musical expression. The project with Fringe Orchestra focuses on pieces from her albums Somnambule (2022) and Rhythm Dissection (2024) as well as highlighting some special songs with vocals in the lead role.

More about Jesse Passenier
Uniting principles of jazz and classical in his work, Dutch composer Jesse Passenier explores the periphery of genres and the depth and possibilities of harmony. The classical Manhattan International Music Competition 2024 awarded Passenier the gold medal with honourable mention for his composition Tao Naar Dis. He is also a laureate of the 2011 Brussels Jazz Orchestra International Composition Contest and the winner of the 2017 Dutch Rogier van Otterloo Award, which recognises his success in bringing together musical genres in crossovers, leading his own orchestra and his skill in orchestral writing. Passenier is co-founder and artistic director of Fluid Foundation and around his activities as a composer, he developed musically in a broader sense as an arranger, conductor, drummer, pianist and vibraphonist.
