Junior Programme

For young musicians in the upper years of secondary education who wish to develop broad musical skills and dream of sharing their passion for music with others, Junior Conservatorium Maastricht offers the Junior Music in Education programme.

Junior Music in Education is intended for broadly oriented musicians in the upper school of secondary education who dream of conveying their passion for music to children or teenagers as music teachers, musical leaders or coaches. The Junior Music in Education curriculum includes weekly group lessons in theory and ear training. All students have individual singing lessons and piano or guitar lessons. Depending on the number of enrolments, we may offer band workshops as well. Students also have the option of joining the Music in Education choir on Wednesday afternoons.

The Junior Music in Education programme offers young musicians in the upper years of secondary education the opportunity to experience what the Music in Education programme is like. Junior Music in Education prepares you for one of the best music teacher training programmes in the Netherlands.

Junior Music in Education Curriculum
The Junior Music in Education curriculum consists of group lessons and individual instrumental lessons.
The weekly group lessons are taught at the Conservatorium Maastricht (Fr. Romanusweg 90) on Saturdays from 10:00 – 14:00 and on Wednesday afternoons. Wednesday's timetable depends on individual classes. Individual lessons are scheduled in consultation with the relevant main subject teacher.

The weekly group lessons consist of theory and ear training, and ensemble playing in a band and a choir setting.
In addition, all students are offered individual singing lessons and, in consultation, piano or guitar lessons.

Theory Group Lessons These lessons involve gaining music theory knowledge and skills across a wide range of styles, covering a broad and diverse repertoire (classical, jazz, pop music). The lessons are very practical: listening and analysing, singing, playing, moving and improvising. Dealing with the subject matter actively contributes to musical understanding, inner hearing and creative abilities.
Get music theory to work to your advantage!
The ensemble lessons are all about playing in a band. Apart from using your own instrument, you will be introduced to all the band instruments. You will be taught the basics for all of these instruments, and learn to listen to each other and play together.
These lessons are led by third- and fourth-year students of the Music in Education programme who have an affinity with band coaching.
Choir: These lessons are all about singing together and connecting vocally. Junior students join students of the first three years of the Music in Education programme to sing pieces from a wide range of styles, conducted by either students or the teacher, while paying attention to vocal technique.
Individual singing lessons: The singing lessons are centred around the development of your voice. You will work on your vocal technique with one of the singing teachers of the regular programme and you will be introduced to various styles and repertoire.
Individual instrumental lessons: together, we will discuss whether you will be offered piano or guitar lessons.
The guitar lessons will teach you how best to accompany your own singing or that of others on guitar. You will also learn how to play the guitar/electric guitar in a band.
The piano lessons will teach you the basics of classical piano as well as the main aspects of jazz/pop piano. You will also learn how to accompany your own singing or that of others on piano in various styles, and how to use a keyboard/synthesizer.

We always try to offer tailor-made solutions, so each student is offered the right kind of support.
The lessons are taught in Dutch.

Apart from the weekly group lessons and individual lessons, the programme includes joint project activities such as concert tours, masterclasses, concerts and benefit evenings.
A new programme is prepared year, based on the group of students participating.

The levels of individual students every are always taken into consideration when compiling the package.

Admission and application
The programme is open to students in the upper school of secondary education. If you would like to join Junior Conservatorium Maastricht, you need to take an audition. The first stage of the audition involves submitting a video of you playing or singing. The second stage is a face-to-face audition day to assess your performance, ear and motivation. More information about the application procedure and admission requirements can be found here.
