Trough the eyes of a child
11:00, Theater aan het Vrijthof, Papyruszaal.
Vrijthof 47, Maastricht

Programme
works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Janssen, Albéniz and de Falla.

Description
Through curious eyes and through open ears we will rediscover Maastricht, simply by changing our perspective. In the big hall of Vrijthof, drawings of schoolchildren relating to major historical events of Maastricht and its surroundings will be projected. These drawings will be accompanied by live music from musicians that previously went to the schools of these children and had interactive workshops with them. It will all be smoothly narrated by an actor.

It shows us Maastricht as we've never seen it before: through the eyes of a child.  Furthermore, it unites people of all ages and backgrounds in the heart of the city: the theatre. Schoolchildren, their families and teachers, but also external public will come together in the Papyruszaal. They will not only see Maastricht in a different light, but also each other.

We collaborate with three schools in Maastricht, Theater aan het Vrijthof and the narrating actor.

Jacques Ibert - Quatre chansons de Don Quichotte (1932)
12 Tonadillas en estilo antiguo, H. 136 (1913)
Spanish traditional tuna music

Description
Don Quijote to Dulcinea – A Love Story is a performance that weaves together classical music, literature, and theatre, reimagining the traditional art song recital. Inspired by Cervantes’ Don Quijote and featuring compositions by Maurice Ravel, Jacques Ibert, and Enrique Granados, and Spanish traditional songs performed by the Tuna de Maastricht, it tells an unconventional love story.

We trace a journey from the imaginary love of the knight Don Quijote to the real, flesh-and-blood experience of love embodied by the woman La Maja in Granados’s Hispanic songs. Inspired by Cervantes’s narrative, the first half follows a man consumed by tales of chivalry, who invents Dulcinea—the pure and perfect lady who exists only in his mind. Through the music of Ravel and Ibert, his world unfolds: one shaped by illusion, where desire transforms reality and dreams replace truth.

In the second half, illusion gives way to memory. Through the songs of Granados, a different woman emerges: La Maja—independent, witty, and deeply human. Unlike Dulcinea, she is not imagined but real.

This performance brings these two worlds into dialogue—the woman dreamed and the woman lived—and asks what remains of love when illusion.

J.S. Bach: Dance with Death
19:00, Opus 9.
Sint Theresiaplein 9 Maastricht

Programme
J.S. Bach:
-Cello suite no. 5 in C minor
-Violin partita no. 3 in E major
-Orchestral suite no. 2 in B minor

Description
Art is immortal; human beings are not. At the threshold of death, a man engages in a final dialogue, seeking to understand mortality, the nature of true art, and whether life has purpose. Three philosophical dialogues, inspired by Platonic dialectic, precede three suites by Johann Sebastian Bach. Word and music intertwine, inviting the listener into attentive reflection, where sound becomes a path toward deeper awareness.

The performance transforms a classical concert into a philosophical experience. Instead of presenting Bach as repertoire, it frames his music within existential dialogue, inviting the audience into active reflection. The dialectical structure guides listening as a conscious act. Music becomes not background or entertainment, but a space of inquiry, where sound and thought converge.

Description
The Project “Wind Band Lessons” gives conducting students a unique hands-on experience and the chance to build a full concert program. The orchestra is built from Conservatorium Maastricht students and local amateur musicians. The process stretches from planning, score preparation and engaging musicians to organising rehearsals and a live performance. Conductors rotate on the podium and receive individual feedback from docent Jos Zegers. This year’s program features well known artists as Gustav Holst, Jan van der Roost and Camille Saint-Saëns, and the Maastricht composer Jean Lambrechts.

The concert has been organised by the wind band conducting class. From thinking of a program and score preparation up to recruiting volunteer amateur musicians from around Maastricht. Without the support of the local wind band scene the concert could not take place. One of the former students, Gabriel Grana Cusi, arranged "Parisiana" by Jean Lambrechts for wind band, since it was originally written for wood winds.

Description
From Inferno to Ancient Echoes is a multidisciplinary performance that explores the deep dialogue between piano music and the poetry and literature sources that inspired it. The project presents a curated journey through works by Liszt, Szymanowski, Ravel, Chopin, and Debussy, each paired with readings from the literary sources that shaped their creation. The narrator will guide the audience through excerpts from the literary inspirations of the composers, followed by live solo piano, piano four hands and lieder performances. This combination aims to create a cohesive dramaturgy in which text and music illuminate one another, revealing layers of emotion and symbolism.

The performance represents a real storytelling time. It begins in the dramatic landscape of Dante’s Inferno (via Liszt’s Après une lecture de Dante) and travels through myth, legend, and symbolism—Szymanowski’s Tantris le Bouffon, Ravel’s Ondine from Gaspard de la nuit, Chopin’s Ballade No. 3 inspired by Mickiewicz, and Debussy’s Six Épigraphes Antiques, rooted in Les Chansons de Bilitis and the ancient lyric tradition of Sappho.

What makes this project special is its focus on Maastricht. This theme is reflected not only in the choice of repertoire, but also in the hearts of the musicians. The project features several true Maastricht-based musicians, including the city composer of Maastricht, Hans Leenders. The aim is to attract an audience that does not listen to classical music. In this way, we hope to give a positive boost to the classical music culture in Maastricht.

Folk Re-shaped
20:00, Willem Hijstek Hall, Classical Department Conservatorium Maastricht.
Bonnefantenstraat 15 Maastricht

Programme
Gy. Ligeti – Síppal, dobbal, nádihegedűvel
L. Berio – Folk Songs

Description
Folk Re-shaped brings together two of the most imaginative works of the 20th century inspired by the sounds of everyday musical culture: Folk Songs by Luciano Berio and Síppal, dobbal, nádihegedűvel by György Ligeti. Both composers draw from folk traditions and vernacular expression, yet transform them through their own distinctive compositional voices. The result is a meeting point between the familiar and the unexpected: melodies rooted in tradition are refracted through the lens of contemporary music, revealing new colors, textures, and meanings.

While both works engage with folk material, they do so in strikingly different ways. Berio’s cycle reimagines traditional songs from various cultures, weaving them into a refined chamber setting that highlights their expressive intimacy. Ligeti, on the other hand, turns to the playful and poetic texts of Hungarian writer Sándor Weöres—including children’s rhymes, nonsense poetry, and folk-inspired verses—to create a vibrant and theatrical musical landscape. Together, the pieces explore how the sounds of everyday life can be reshaped through the imagination of two iconic composers.

The concert will be accompanied by a short lecture that offers insight into the works and their interpretative challenges. This moment of reflection highlights the spirit of artistic research—practice-based inquiry through performance. By bringing together musicology, performance, and audience dialogue, the event invites listeners not only to hear the music but also to enter the creative process behind it.

Please note that any filming or audio recording is prohibited. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Sounds in Motion
20:00, Banka Studios.
Bankastraat 3 Maastricht

Sounds in Motion is a collaboration between Conservatorium Maastricht and Intro in Situ, presented as part of the Moving Music Festival 2026. It features new works by composition students from Vykintas Baltakas’ class: Avery Chan, Sara Carmona, Aiden Lewis, and Phuc Nguyen, along with a performance by Margo Sanda, invited by Intro in Situ.

The program brings together a wide range of new works exploring live radio noise, feedback systems, guitar looping, electronics, and improvisation. Moving between composed material and real-time processes, the concert creates a shared space where different approaches to sound meet and evolve. Here, sounds are not fixed, but continuously shaping, shifting, and transforming through listening and interaction - so that each work becomes part of an ongoing process rather than a finished statement.

The evening concludes with a performance by Margo Sanda, whose work moves between experimental pop, raw energy, and fragmented song forms, bringing a distinctive and uncompromising voice to close the program.

Program

[1] “WAKE UP!” for live radio ensemble
Set in a scenery of dreaming and battling sleepiness, WAKE UP! is an exploration of radio noise and the unpredictability of radio broadcast.
Composer: Avery Chan
Performers: Avery Chan and 3 Clock Radios

[2] “Sign of the Sun” for Ensemble
This work, inspired by the astrological signs (in this case, the Sun signs) is conceived as an interactive concert experience in which the listener becomes part of the music. An ensemble performs within a space where the audience is encircled by speakers, creating an immersive sonic environment. The musicians follow a sequence of images by Canadian artist Eva Boudreau, which guide the performance.
Composer: Sara Carmona
Performers: Musicians from Conservatorium Maastrichts

[3] “Dreamscape” for Alto Saxophone, Tibetan Bowls and Electronics
The piece explores the sense of nostalgia that emerges upon waking and realizing you are no longer in the dream world—a feeling often described as “Anemoia”.
Composer: Sara Carmona
Performers: Francesca Fantini (Saxophone), Sara Carmona (Tibetan Bowls, Electronics)

[4] “collages of feedback” for Live Electronics
The work is created entirely from the sound feedback produced by a non-input mixer. From this raw sound source, sound samples are carefully collected and processed, creating a half-hour-long piece of music. Mechanical and sometimes jarring sounds are transformed into a rich and evocative sound palette, revealing unexpected nuances and emotional depth. Based on a collage-like method, the work explores a creative process in which ideas arise from fixed materials, allowing sound fragments to be assembled into a vibrant and expressive whole.
Composer: Phuc Nguyen
Performer: Phuc Nguyen (Live Electronics)

[5] “Looper” for guitar, looper pedal and electronics

The work is a solo performance by Aiden Lewis, based on pre-made guitar loops as well as loops created live on stage.
Composer: Aiden Lewis
Performer: Aiden Lewis (Guitar, Looper Pedal, Electronics)

[6] Sounds in Motion
An improvisational performance by all the composers, combining all the sonic elements of the concert's works: guitar loops, radio noise, Tibetan bowls, feedback noise, electronics, etc., into a single performance.
Performers: Avery Chan, Sara Carmona, Aiden Lewis, Phuc Nguyen

[7] Intro in Situ invites Margo Sanda
Pulsing rhythms effortlessly merge with a free form of storytelling, where grooves and melodies are pulled apart with precise yet carefree nonchalance.
Italian-born, Copenhagen-based musician Margo Sanda presents a special live performance. Her music, rooted in experimental pop with a raw, almost punk edge, exists in the ‘in-between’: part song, part chaos, part digital cave.
Performers: Margo Sanda & Giacomo Baronchelli

In collaboration with Intro in Situ. Visit their website for the complete programme in Banka Studios on 21 May.

Description
An den Mond reimagines the Liederabend as an immersive, narrative concert inviting audiences to reflect on humanity’s eternal night companion: the Moon. The programme unfolds in four phases: admiration, longing, emotional disarray, and acceptance; each shaped by distinct lighting and musical atmospheres. Drawing on Romantic operatic and early 20th-century artsong, it also offers fresh instrumental arrangements that cast beloved works in a renewed light while honoring their emotional core.

Novel instrumental arrangements and thoughtful programming balance familiarity with discovery, and alongside a dynamic lighting palette, it offers audiences both intimacy and surprise in a conceptually unified, multi-sensory experience. From Schubert to Schoenberg, with diverse instrumental colors and lesser-known works alongside staples, the concert balances surprise with familiarity, while also creating a cohesive poetic and musical arc that binds the repertoire into a unified experience of emotional and stylistic depth.

Two Out of Five: Duos for piano or guitar and jazz vocals
A cappella ensemble 'Arion'

Description
The saxophone quartet and duo group Two Out of Five have been working with coaches Greg Torunski and Doug Weiss respectively on intimate programmes in smaller settings. This performance highlights these smaller settings and shows a culmination of their efforts until now.
In addition, the vocal ensemble Arion will perform: a young, ambitious group of four professional singers with diverse musical and cultural backgrounds. Inspired by the power and expressiveness of the voice, they create a close-knit, blended sound, with a repertoire ranging from original compositions to arrangements of jazz and musical theatre music.

Description
Rites of Transformation is a symphonic concert performed by the Maastricht Kamerorkest in its largest formation. The program centers on Manuel de Falla’s El amor brujo, interpreted by Paula Bila, a versatile singer from Cádiz, the same city where Falla was born and the birthplace of conductor Elena Barrios. This shared origin adds a meaningful cultural connection to the performance and highlights the Andalusian roots of the work.  The second half of the program features Igor Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite (1919), a landmark of early twentieth-century orchestral writing.

Rites of Transformation shows a unique combination of repertoire, performers, and context. The concert brings together two iconic works: Falla’s El amor brujo and Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite. This makes the event not just a musical performance, but also a personal rite of passage, a meeting of heritage, artistry, and professional milestone.
