Wind Band Conducting

Choosing to study Band Conducting at Conservatorium Maastricht means choosing to spend an intensive period developing your individual talent. The supporting curriculum aids this development and gradually adds challenges: Brass Band, Wind Band and Fanfare Band conducting, leading rehearsals in orchestral projects, conducting practice in front of several orchestras. The combination of individual attention amid an international class and a curriculum with substance will inspire you to achieve your full potential.

In the Bachelor’s programme, you will focus on conducting technique, knowledge of instruments, rehearsal technique and conducting ensembles.
In the Master’s programme, you will focus on gaining practical experience in front of amateur and professional orchestras.

Admission
requirements

First round

The audition consists of two rounds. For the first round, the candidate needs to record 2 videos that contain:

  • Video 1: A short introduction of him/herself in English: talk about your musical experiences, your motivation to study music, your main subject and why you choose to audition at Conservatorium Maastricht.

  • Video 2: A recording of 10 to 20 minutes of you conducting a rehearsal or a concert with a wind ensemble. The candidate should be facing the camera, both facial expression and gestures being clearly visible.

Additional videos (not required): the candidate may provide concert video registrations.

The videos should be uploaded to an online platform such as YouTube.com or Vimeo.com. It is the candidate’s responsibility to make sure that the video links work.

Second round

The committee may decide to invite the candidate for an online or in-person live audition after reviewing the video material. The candidate will receive a score to prepare and to be conducted with two pianos during the live audition.

In the second round, the candidate is always invited to an online interview with one of the Master Project Coaches. In this interview we discuss the candidate's motivation and experience in the field of research and cultural entrepreneurship. The Master Project Coach furthermore determines the level of English proficiency.
