The LUCA Big Band led by Frank Vaganée (also artistic director of the Brussels Jazz Orchestra) is attached to LUCA School of Arts (Campus Lemmens) in Leuven. A year ago, the band shone in the Hnita Jazz Club with guest Tutu Puoane, who replaced her compatriot Zoë Modiga at the last minute. This time the programme features a classic repertoire, namely a wide selection from Duke Ellington's oeuvre including parts of the Far East Suite, his arrangement of The Nutcracker Suite, and many other well-known jazz standards such as "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", "Portrait of Louis Armstrong", "Raincheck", "Blood Count", "In a Mellow Tone", and so on.
The choice of Duke Ellington, one of the most legendary composers and orchestral conductors the 20th century has known, is not accidental. After all, 2024 marks the 125th anniversary of his birth, as well as the 50th anniversary of his death. Ellington's name will also appear several times on the Hnita Jazz Club's programme later this year.
The Conservatorium Maastricht Big Band led by Carlo Nardozza headlines this edition with a selection of repertoire originally performed by one of the biggest big bands outside of the United States. The Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland Big Band was active in the 60s and 70s featuring top European musicians. Francy Boland was a huge contributor to the ensemble, arranging and writing a large portion of their repertoire. This evening's presentation will include works such as "Johnny One Note”, “Just in Time”, and “Love for Sale” among others.
