This programme is developed for you to become a professional in the field of music education. We provide a practice-oriented learning environment and a close collaboration between teachers, students, graduates and the professional field. Based on your passion for music, you will learn about and work with educational and pedagogical principles and at the same time lifting up your musical knowledge and skills to a higher level. Through specializations, research, projects, free study space and internships, we create the space and opportunities for you to develop your educational, musical and innovative talents. In this way we work on an excellent employment perspective in the Netherlands, the EU at all educational levels. For us, a Music-educator is more than a teacher. Together with us you will make sure that through education music will be transmitted to new learners, regardless of age or background. Programme Music in Education is a practice-based programme that offers plenty of opportunities to develop your musical, (special) education and teaching skills. The programme uses a wide variety of teaching methods, including project education, individual instrumental/vocal lessons, teacher training and e-learning.
The first two years are mainly dedicated to the development of broad knowledge and skills: educational activities, projects and teacher training. Part of the curriculum has a so-called 10- week structure. The activities within this structure are partly thematic. Each period concludes with a project week. Your professional attitude and development are guided and evaluated. In addition to the thematic approach, there is also a linear method: a learning pathway. This mainly applies to instrumental/vocal education and music theory.
Specialisation starts in your third year. You can choose either Music in Arts Education or Special Music Education. These specialisations will allow you to gain additional competence in your future profession. You can create your own individual profile by taking specific courses and work placements. You will also improve your vocal and instrumental skills further. The specialisation is concluded in the graduation process.
If you have already completed a Bachelor of Music degree, you can take the shortened twoyear programme Music in Education Intensive and gain a full teaching qualification for all types of education.
The curriculum overview lists the courses that make up the curriculum of the main subject and the number of credits (ECTS) per year. The document Course descriptions contains most of the courses in the Jazz and Classical Bachelor of Music programmes. Not every course is relevant for each student. In the curriculum overview, you can see which courses are part of your curriculum. The courses are listed in alphabetical order. Please read it carefully. You are required, by the way, to obtain 60 ECs in each academic year of 42 weeks. As 1 credit represents 28 hours of study, you are expected to spend 1,680 hours a year on your studies. That is 40 hours a week. Please bear this in mind.
The specialisation in the curriculum consists of Music in Arts Education (MIK) and Special Music Education (OMB) . You will find general admission requirements under Apply.
Music in Arts Education (Dutch: MIK) This specialisation is oriented to all the institutions where you might work as a music teacher or educator. In addition to arts education in schools, it covers the entire extracurricular sector, such as education departments of orchestras, arts education institutions like music schools, participation in projects commissioned by local authorities, but also self-employment. This specialisation will enable you to work in any organisation dedicated to arts and cultural education.
Special Music Education (Dutch: OMB) This specialisation allows you, as a music teacher, to deepen your knowledge of special education and enhance your remedial teaching skills. You will be qualified to teach high-quality music lessons in special education and various types of support and service provision. This includes working with people with a mental or physical impairment, geriatric patients, children with socio-emotional problems, etc.
Technology-Enhanced Music Education (TEL); only in Dutch
The main focus is on gaining a better understanding of and designing digital applications for music teaching. It is highly relevant for music teachers to familiarise themselves with commonly used music and information technology. Yet many music education practices require particular solutions. You will learn to recognise the specific needs of your field and offer creative digital solutions through programming and experimentation.
Vocal-Instrumental-Artistic (VIA); only in Dutch
Broadening and deepening your own artistic development and applying it in educational situations. You will have instrumental/vocal lessons at a high level and participate in projects and masterclasses in the Classical Music and Jazz departments. Attention will be paid to instrumental and vocal teaching skills, with their specific posture and movement aspects and instructional methods. But you will also explore your own artistic limits and learn how to deal with these in the practice of art education.
Interculturality (INT); only in Dutch
This specialisation focuses on developing intercultural competencies. Art education transcends borders. If you are interested in the ways in which music is taught in other cultures or continents, and what specific knowledge or attitude that requires of you as a 'globalist' music educator, this is the right specialisation for you. Naturally, this will be combined with an international teaching practice or work placement.
