Working with the trumpet department
Professor Ryan Carniaux (Jazz trumpet and ensemble at Folkwang Hochschule, Essen) comes to Maastricht this October to work with our ensembles and trumpet players. Join us for a plenary session where Ryan will discuss improvisation, band-playing and coach one of our ensembles!
Prof Carniaux, born in New York City, played trumpet as a teenager in various bands, including John Allmark's jazz orchestra. With a scholarship, he studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston from 1998 to 2002 with Tiger Okoshi, Greg Hopkins, Phil Wilson and Ken Cervenka. He moved to Europe in 2003 and completed a master's degree in jazz trumpet at the Maastricht Conservatory in the Netherlands from 2005 to 2007.
In addition to his university activities, Carniaux works as a freelance trumpet player and is involved in various projects and CD recordings. In 2011, he released the CD ‘Reflections of the Persevering Spirit’ with his own band. Other tours and projects include the 2014 album ‘Constellations, and the Björk Project’ produced together with Mark Egan and Karl Latham.
Carniaux has played with many well-known jazz greats from Europe and the USA, including Manfred Schoof, Gerd Dudek, Wolfgang Lackerschmid, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Misha Mengelberg, David Liebman, Jerry Bergonzi, Mark Murphy and Douglas Sides.
Prof Carniaux has taught for many years as a guest lecturer in Germany and abroad, as well as at music schools and as a speaker at international workshops.
