The ARIA tv programme is looking for the new opera star in the Netherlands. In the 8-part series, the candidates participate in challenging singing assignments every week. So is Conservatorium Maastricht student Sílvia Sequeira.

Sílvia was born and raised in Portugal. At the age of 15 Sílvia gets singing lessons, but she doesn't take it too seriously and throws the hat at it. She only sings Italian songs with which she has no connection whatsoever. One day, her teacher lets her watch Madame Butterfly, Puccini's Italian opera. Sílvia has never seen or heard anything so beautiful and is immediately in love with the film, the music and the opera. She starts with small arias and slowly she dares to look further to more difficult and more profound pieces.

It is only at the age of 25 that she notices that her voice is moving in the right direction for the operatic repertoire. Since then she feels a little more confident, but according to herself she can still work on her technique. She loves nothing more than performing, being on stage and working with professionals, conductors and an orchestra.

The ARIA programme can be seen from Sunday 2 October 2022 at 8.30 p.m. on NPO 1.
