Session 1 - 19:00 - 19:30
Session 1 - 19:00 - 19:30 - Willem Hijstek Hall - Schubert's "Unfinished" - Lumen Ensemble
Programme
F. Schubert - Symphony No. 8 in B minor “Unfinished”
I. Allegro moderato
II. Andante con moto
Programme notes
In the 8th Symphony of Franz Schubert, known as the ‘Unfinished’, we can hear both the powerful symphonic energy of Beethoven and the exquisite melodies Schubert is well known for creating. The first movement, ‘Allegro moderato’, narrates two traumatic experiences, disputes with his father and the death of his mother, and it is composed in sonata form. From the very beginning, the music unfolds from what seems like a ghost, a pianissimo shadow in the cellos and basses, and develops through a very gradual but intense crescendo. This crescendo becomes almost a voyage, a desperate search for a meaning in life. In the second movement, ‘Andante con motto’, he tries to find comfort in the suffering and sadness of his life. Both movements tell us the story of his life and the constant separation between love and pain of a very troubled composer. The reason why this symphony is unfinished remains a mystery. Schubert probably tried to continue the musical development of this theme, as 20 orchestrated bars of a fragment of the scherzo were found, but possibly due to illness or wanting to get on with new projects, he didn’t succeed. It is also possible that he realised that it made no sense. The piece was, in fact, perfect as it was. There was no need to complete it and it could therefore be considered ‘finished’."
Biography
Lumen Ensemble is a musical group formed by students from Conservatorium Maastricht who love playing both chamber and symphonic music. This is why we have created a project where we can play arrangements of great symphonic works without the need of gathering a whole orchestra.
We are excited to present ourselves for the first time during the Day/Night of Classical Music 2024 with Schubert's "Unfinished" 8th Symphony.
Though Schubert has nine symphonies, he decided to first compose Symphony 9 before starting Symphony nº8.
What he didn't know is that Symphony nº8 would be his last one and would remain unfinished before many who followed him would try to finish it.

I. Bordel 1900
II. Cafe 1930

Programme notes
This programme has been designed with the purpose of bringing to the public a musical an aesthetic contrast. On the one hand, the opening piece of the programme is classical - romantic Sonata for violin and guitar written by Austrian composer Ferdinand Rebay. It presents an intriguing dialogue between both instruments and shows deep emotions through the introverted E minor tone and a suitable use of harmony. On the other hand, the History of tango composed by Argentinian musician Astor Piazzolla brings to us the warmth of this popular dance style, through passionate melodies and rhythms and rapid transitions. The intense but contrasting energy of both pieces invite the public to join the concert experience in the same enthusiastic way in which the musicians carry out the performance.

Programme notes
As musicians, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician, we always aim towards a concept of performance in which feelings, emotion and soul are the center on which everything is built.
For us the word emotion means being alive, being human. Emotion unites all people; when we admire works of art, when we listen to musical pieces, and when we dance...
From the connection we find between music, dance and emotion, E-Motion emerges, a small conceptual concert in which we will travel from the static to the vibrant, from the calm to the storm, from the serenity that will separate four musicians seated from their audience, to the energy that will unite us while we share space, music and of course, E-motion.

Session 1 - 19:00 - 19:30 - Room 311 - A love letter to Mozart - Kolja Joseph Gibbs
Programme
S. Molitor - Große Sonate für Guitare Allein Op.7
- 1. Adagio - Agitato, ma non troppo Allegro
- 2. Andante
W.A. Mozart - Così fan tutte K.588 (excerpts arr. S. Molitor)
Act I: Al fato dan legge
Act I: Ah, che tutta in un momento
Act II: Secondate, aurrette amiche
Programme notes
Molitor and Mozart share some obvious similarities. Born 10 years apart (Mozart being the elder), both chose Vienna as the place to evolve their careers. However, nowadays, one is remembered and the other is forgotten. The music of Simon Molitor, mostly known for his guitar works, is very rarely played. This is a shame, as his music has a surprisingly high quality and can be quite creative in many ways. Of course, it does not compare to Mozart though, but in Molitor’s Op.7 sonata the texture and light-hearted character bring to mind moments from some of Mozart’s piano works, especially. Furthermore, Molitor’s love of Mozart is made irrefutable by his charming solo guitar arrangements of some beautiful moments from Mozart’s opera Così fan tutte. The whole performance will be performed on a romantic guitar, which is what Molitor would have composed for/on.

Programme notes
“He could amuse, shock, arouse laughter and deep emotion as no other.”
— Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart about Joseph Haydn
Haydn was one of the first composers to develop the repertoire of the string quartet. His early works for this ensemble had a lighter tone, an intimate version of serenades and divertimentos meant to accompany events at royal courts where he used to work. However, in the Op.20, Haydn delved deeper, intensifying the emotional expression of the music and adding layers of complexity not found in his earlier quartets. With this set of 6 compositions, the string quartet left behind the traces of its lighter origins and became a complete genre of serious instrumental music, standing alongside the classical symphony.
The String Quartet in F minor Op. 20 No. 5, is among Haydn's most intense quartets due to its dark and occasionally violent mood and its culmination in a severe fugue based on a terse, jagged subject. Probably the most frequently played of the group, it stands as a memorable sentinel at the portal opening into the history of string quartet masterworks.

A. Glazunov - Saxophone Quartet Op. 109 (1932)
III. Finale
Programme notes
Joseph Haydn's Op. 20, No. 5, a gripping string quartet of intense mood and structural brilliance, stands as a memorable sentinel at the portal of string quartet masterworks. Opening with a dramatic Allegro Moderato, Haydn employs silence to enhance transitions, creating a powerful emotional impact. The Menuetto maintains a stern F minor tone, with a contrasting trio in F major adding a touch of lightness. The Adagio, a charming siciliano dance, showcases varied textures, exquisite violin passages, and Haydn's imaginative variations. This quartet is a timeless fusion of innovation and emotion, marking a significant chapter in the history of string quartet repertoire. Alexander Glazunov's Quatuor pour saxophones, one of his last works and among the earliest for this instrumentation, offers a musical journey through history. Delivered for this younger instrument group, the dynamic rondo finale, with its lyrical middle section, pays homage to Bach's forms, adding a fresh and vibrant layer to the saxophone quartet repertoire. Together, these pieces create a compelling programme that bridges musical eras and showcases the evolution of chamber music.

Programme notes
This programme is thought out as a way to show the possibilities of this peculiar group and the unique qualities of the viola. The pieces are all contemporary but with such different styles and atmospheres that they create a very colorful journey. It all starts from the folk and colorful impression of Whittaker’s Modal March through the powerful mix of past and present of the Chaconne transformation by Ichiro Nodaïra to finish with the more rough and primal beauty of The Circle of the Diminished fifth by Daniil Zemtsov.
Biography
The Diminished Violas are a new and dynamic viola quartet based in Maastricht.
The groups members Pietro Romagnoli, Dante Lind, Helena Camps and Helena De Bruyn met in September 2022 in Conservatorium Maastricht where all of them currently study with professor Julia Dinerstein. The ensemble joined forces in December 2022 for a one time occasion, but after discovering a shared passion for the beautiful, yet rather unknown, repertoire for viola quartet its members decided to continue their journey together. With the Diminished violas these young violists want to delve into a wide range of repertoire, mainly focusing on music composed especially for this instrumentation. Though largely unknown by the wider public, works written for viola quartet are extremely diverse, varying from classicism over tangos to atonality, and among them are many hidden gems worth discovering. The uncommon instrumentation of a viola quartet lends itself exceptionally well to perform music not only by modern, but living composers. This aligns perfectly with the vision of the quartet as they feel living composers are still all too often ignored in classical music. Through their varied programmes the ensemble wants to give contemporary composers a platform and introduce them to the public. Nowadays, Diminished Violas are coached by Julia Dinerstein and Kyoko Yonemoto.

Programme
Zoltán Kodály - Sonata for Solo Cello op. 8
2. Adagio (con grand' espressione)
3. Allegro Molto Vivace
Programme notes
Composed in Hungary in 1915 during the World War I, this sonata is among the most significant works for Solo Cello written since J. S. Bach's Cello Suites. It contains influences of Debussy and Bartók, as well as the inflections and nuances of Hungarian folk music. Aiming to expand the possibilities of the instrument, Kodály decided to use a double scordatura in both lower strings, which produces a characteristic sonority.
With a serious and meditative tone, its second movement (Adagio con grand' espressione) evokes the human voice using traditional laments typically sung by women at funerals.
The third movement (Allegro Molto Vivace) is a test of endurance and technical prowess and memorization skills. Being one of the most challenging pieces in the cello repertoire, it includes unusual pizzicato, left hand and bowing techniques. It essentially turns the cello into a one-man-band with the sonority of Hungarian folk dance music and children's songs.

Therefore, his style is very fluent in two different languages: the lyrical and eclectic wit of Italian classical music, and the charming and descriptive colors of Hollywood film music.
This Quintet, written in 1950 for the legendary guitarist Andrès Segovia, represents one of the best examples of Tedesco's peculiar style.

Programme notes
This late piano cycle by Johannes Brahms contains 6 pieces, each with a character of its own. Highly condensed and expressive, this cycle can be seen as a microcosm of Brahms’ inner emotional world; the music is rich, full of depth and highly polyphonic. Brahms wrote the cycle as an old man and by embedding the Dies Irae theme the last piece might hint at an imminent death.

Programme
S. Rachmaninoff - Symphonic Danses for two piano’s
I. Non Allegro
II. Andante con moto (Tempo di Valse)
Programme notes
This performance marks the first time in over a decade that these two pianists have reunited to play together, weaving a tapestry of musical collaboration enriched by years of individual growth and experience. Russian Romantic; Rachmaninov's "Symphonic Dances" for two pianos, composed concurrently with the orchestral version in 1940, is a remarkable adaptation that showcases his mastery in piano composition. This version translates the orchestral textures and colors into a format for two pianos, offering a more intimate and introspective take on the original work.
Each movement in this adaptation retains the emotional depth and thematic richness of the orchestral piece. The first movement's rhythmic vitality, the second's reflective melancholy, and the final movement's spirited themes are all effectively rendered on the pianos. This two-piano arrangement goes beyond a simple transcription; it's a reimagining that highlights Rachmaninov's genius, offering pianists a deep dive into the work's complexities and listeners a unique and compelling experience.

Session 3 - 20:30 - 21:00 - Room 102 - Rosamunde in Four - Maas Quartet
Programme
F. Schubert - "Rosamunde" op.29 n.1
Allegro ma non troppo
Andante
Menuetto. Allegretto
Allegro moderato
Programme notes
By performing Scubert's "Rosamunde" Quartet we would like to tell the story behind this Quartet, the only one published and performed during the composer's lifetime. As he frequently did, Schubert borrowed melodic and rhythmic seeds from his other music: in this case, the slow melody from the second movement is taken from the play "Rosamunde" written a year earlier. Indeed, is not a case that the quartet's nickname was supplied by history rather than Schubert himself. Three years later, the same theme will appear in the Improptu for solo piano Op 142 n.3, published posthumously. With "Rosamunde in four" we want to underline the beauty and the development of this melody in the version for the string quartet.
Biography
Maas Quartet is a newborn string quartet based in Maastricht from the friendship of its members. The Quartet is formed by people from different countries (Italy, Germany, Greece) and starts from the pleasure of sharing the same musical point of view: love for lyricism and particular attention to the sound enable them to face all the great repertoire composed for this particular kind of ensemble. The members of the Maas Quartet are Enrica Morbiducci (violin), Marina Iliadou (violin), Pietro Romagnoli (viola), and Mathilde Heise (cello) and they all play modern instruments. Their ambition for the future is to keep on strengthening their artistic vision as a quartet and establish their name in the musical environment.

Session 3 - 20:30 - 21:00 - Room 109 - Opposite Yet Complementary: Life And Death - Mühlfeld Trio
Programme
From this dualism emerges our program: on one hand, the Fantasy Trio Op. 26 by R. Muczynski is a hymn to life, in its eclecticism and variety of rhythms, styles and ideas; on the other hand, the Danse Macabre by C. Saint Säens, where death is the main actor around which the story develops. In these pieces, the dissonances and the slow reflective themes in Muczynski's trio, combined with the dance-like portrayal of death in "Danse Macabre” reveling euphorically and wildly, blend together, highlighting the intricate relationship between these two states.
Fantasy Trio op. 26 - R. Muczynsky
I. Allegro energico
II. Andante con espressione
III. Allegro deciso
IV. Introduction and Finale
Danse Macabre op. 40 - C. Saint-Saëns
Programme notes
Our programme emerges from the dualism between Fauré and Saint Säens, mirroring their evolving relationship from pupil and master to close friends. Their interaction includes an opposite yet complementary dialectic, a concept that plays a leading role in the repertoire chosen for this event: on one hand, the Trio Op. 120 by Fauré which is a hymn to life, in its elegance, in its variety, in its subtle but continuous energy; on the other hand, the Danse Macabre by Saint Säens, where death is the main actor around which the story develops. Complementary and opposite at the same time are also the characters of the two pieces: it is death that revels euphorically and wildly, while life is given a more melancholic and complex treatment.

W. Walton: 5 Bagatelles for guitar (1972)
Allegro assai
Alla Cubana
L. Brouwer: Sonata No. 1 para guitarra (1990)
II. Sarabanda de Scriabin
III. La Toccata de Pasquini
Programme notes
I chose the theme of 'metamorphosis' because I consider it one of the defining elements of my artistic personality. All of the compositions in the programmeme are built upon core elements, the development of which shapes the entire musical structure of the piece. Finally, a series of contrasting episodes in character and feel is achieved through this 'morphing process'.
The hystorical gap between the compositions should not suggest an equally discontinous musical journey. For istance, Telemann's Fantasia incorporates very programmematic features and expressive gestures into the traditional approach to composition, whereas the title "Sarabanda de Scriabin" and "Toccata de Pasquini" in Brouwer's Sonata suggest the influence of Baroque music on what would otherwise be trivially defined as 'contemporary music'.
Biography
When he picked up a guitar for the first time, Italian guitarist Massimiliano Testa was just two years old. From that moment on, his instrument has been integral part of his personal development.
What Massimiliano cares about the most is to express himself and emotionally involve the audience, since he strongly believes that a deeper level of mutual understanding and sense of communion can be reached, through music.
Massimiliano is now studying classical guitar at Conservatorium Maastricht, where he’s attending his second Master in the class of Maestro Carlo Marchione.
In addiction to his concert activity, Massimiliano is very fond of research. He’s about to finish his Musicology Master studies at Tor Vergata University of Rome, conducting a thesis on 19th century guitar repertoire and the importance of Partimento and Galant Schemata for its interpretation.
On 10th December 2019, under the guidance of Maestro Eugenio Becherucci, he obtained his bachelor degree, achieved with top marks and honours. He then continued with his Master studies, graduating with top marks, honors and honorable mention.

Experience Schubert's 'Gesänge aus 'Wilhelm Meister,'' D. 877, a trio of expressive lieder inspired by Goethe's novel. Through Schubert's compositions, Mignon's character is painted with delicate melodies and subtle harmonic shifts, mirroring the nuances of Goethe's literary creation. Themes of solitude, hidden emotions, and profound longing are woven into Schubert's melodies. The songs, enriched by Mignon's mysterious and tragic character, explore the complexities of human emotion within the Romantic Lied tradition.
Francis Poulenc's La courte paille, offers a delightful journey through whimsical miniatures. Comprising seven charming songs, this song cycle reflects Poulenc's signature wit and playfulness. Set to surrealist poems by Maurice Carême, each piece is a musical vignette, showcasing Poulenc's distinctive harmonic language and inviting listeners into an enchanting world of imaginative expression.

As a duo, we have been active since the past summer and have been enjoying almost weekly coachings from the great Abigail Richards, here in the Conservatorium of Maastricht since September.
Despina Louka (Soprano) and Pieter-Jan Van den Broeck (Pianist) sincerely hope that, despite the lingering cold winter winds outside, you thoroughly enjoy this spirited concert, anticipating the imminent arrival of spring.

As a duo, we are constantly searching for new repertoire to enrich our palette of sounds and colors. This quest has led us to Ravel's wondrous cycle, Shéhérazade. Our theatrical inclination resonates well with the storytelling aspect of this piece.

The introduction of our performance was made by our friend Leon Lončar and his Prelude for horn trio.

F. Schubert - Sonatine Op. 137, No. 2 D. 385 in A minor for Violin (arr. for soprano saxophone by Ines Gonzalez)
I. Allegro Moderato
II. Andante
III. Menuetto (Allegro)
IV. Allegro
Programme notes
Schubert composed his 3 Sonatas for Violin in 1816. They are very intimate, not at all virtuosistic, in contrast with the romantic sonata ideal of the time. They are more close to the classical style than the romantic, which makes a unique blend between styles that is the essence of what we want to share. These works are the perfect opportunity for the saxophone to get out of the comfort zone and explore the unlimited possibilities that the music brings. As a very talented composer, Schubert uses heavily idiomatic writing, showcasing the violin in all its glory. Therefore, when played with a saxophone, this music requires a very deep understanding and delicacy in the approach, but it also brings new angles and possibilities to an absolute classic. The mixture between tradition and innovation, between simplicity and complexity, is what we want all of you to enjoy today with us in this renewed "Schubertiade".

Caroline Shaw: Partita for 8 Voices, IV. Passacaglia
* composed by Sarah Meyer, Malena Hoffmann, Nora Tarraf, and Luna Gräfin von Hardenberg
Programme notes
Intense interest drives this group to experiment with the voice within them and explore what is possible. An example of such experimentation is Caroline Shaw’s Partita for 8 voices. In this a cappella piece, the composer re-thinks baroque dances, transforming them for the human voice.
Honored with a Pulitzer Prize, this piece stands as state-of-the-art not only for vocal composition but also as an example of excellent contemporary classical music.
This piece employs only 8 voices. What you will hear are instructions on how to sing baroque dances, conveyed through singing, humming, gliding, speaking, and unnamable noises, both in sung unison and across harmonies.

Programme notes
Welcome, esteemed audience, to an extraordinary journey through the evolution of the horn quartet—a musical odyssey that spans centuries and encompasses the nuanced expressions of two exceptional ensembles, the Kaleidos Quartet and the Quartifact Quartet.
Our exploration begins at the cusp of the 19th century, a period marked by the emergence of the natural horn. Composers like Mozart and Haydn, captivated by its expressive capabilities, embraced the quartet format to showcase the instrument's lyrical and sonorous qualities. Tonight, the Kaleidos Quartet takes us on a poignant exploration of this era with Jacques François Gallay's Grand Quatuor, Op.26 (1835), a composition that embodies the romantic spirit of the time.
Transitioning through the corridors of musical history, we arrive at the 20th century, where the Quartifact Quartet invites us into the dynamic fusion of tradition and modernity. Frigyes Hidas' "Kamarazene," a Hungarian masterpiece from 1928, serves as a gateway to the contemporary landscape of chamber music. The Quartifact Quartet's interpretation reveals the evolving nature of the horn quartet, where tradition meets innovation in a captivating dialogue.
As these two remarkable ensembles traverse the kaleidoscope of influences, they present not only performances but interpretations—a dialogue between musicians and composers across the ages. The horns, in the hands of the Kaleidos and Quartifact Quartets, become vessels that bridge the gap between past and present, weaving a nuanced narrative of passion, innovation, and sonic exploration.
Join us on this introspective exploration of sound and emotion as we pay homage to the kaleidoscopic nature of musical expression. The subtle nuances and respectful interpretations offered by the Kaleidos and Quartifact Quartets invite you to witness the enduring dialogue between tradition and innovation—a conversation that transcends time and resonates in the hearts of all who appreciate the language of music.

The Partita No. 3 in E major for solo violin BWV 1006, is the last work in Johann Sebastian Bach's set of Sonatas and Partitas for violin solo. Altough this pieces weren´t often played after Bach´s death nowadays it is considered a jewelery of the violin repertorie.
The Caprices by H. Wieniawski are really technically challenging. There are many virtuoso passages but they are musically interesting at the same time, making these small pieces perfect to entertain and amuse the public after a work as musically complex as the Partita Nº3.

S. Rachmaninoff - Variations on a Theme of Corelli, Op.42
Programme notes
Many composers have written variations on follia, a popular chord progression of Portuguese or Spanish origin, but undoubtedly the most complete version of all is the one written by Rachmaninov in 1931. This version is mysterious, subtle, and full of colors. It reminds us of the baroque at times and at times it surprises us with the most unexpected harmonies. It moves from passion to agitation, from contemplation to memories, and stops to observe the smallest details. In short, it is a work that takes the characteristics of the subject to the limit and caresses them without fear.

Programme notes
Liszt was a great admirer of Schubert's music, and he was influenced by Schubert's melodies and harmony.
Schubert’s Piano Sonata in A Major, D 664, composed in 1819, is an extremely beautiful piece with enchanting melodies. Thirty-two years later, Liszt composed 'Rigoletto', a paraphrase of the famous quartet 'Bella figlia dell’amore' from the final act of Verdi's opera.
This concert will guide us on a musical journey through the cantabile melodies of Schubert and the virtuosity of Liszt.

Programme notes
Scordatura (literally mistuning) is a change of one or more strings’ pitch from the original tuning. It typically attempts to allow unusual chords or colors, making certain passages easier to play. It is the focus of the chosen repertoire: by all means, the scordatura isn’t simply a technical challenge for the player nor an uncomfortable reading feature on the score during practice. In Dutilleux’s work, the scordatura becomes a musical and expressive necessity, a profound need of the composer to shape the instrument so deeply through the musical thought, to the point where the cello needs to physically change itself. Naturally, the performer is asked to open their mind and change as well their attitude and perception of the sound, its new set of natural harmonics and different expressive tools at hand. This musical journey shapes both instrument and performer, changing their voices into two different languages and presenting to the audience two completely different instruments and experiences. The chosen Bach Suite, is a perfect introduction for the darker and refined musicality found in Dutilleux challenging piece.
"Romantic impressions: Variations and Transcriptions" portraits examples of original repertoire originally composed for cello and piano with two other pieces thought for different instruments, and yet often performed and strong core of the cello repertoire: a small journey through the instrument different nuances, so versatile it can broaden its possibilities and introduce the breath control of wind instruments and recall older and forgotten instruments such as the Arpeggione.

Programme notes
Welcome to "Harmonies of Brazil," a musical exploration into the soul-stirring compositions of the eminent Brazilian composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos. Born in 1887, Villa-Lobos emerged as a pioneering force, reshaping the landscape of classical music by infusing it with the vibrant rhythms and cultural richness of his native Brazil. Tonight, we embark on a journey through a carefully curated selection of his works, each a testament to his boundless creativity and profound connection to the musical traditions of his homeland.
Bachianas Brasileiras represent a fusion of Brazilian folk and popular music with the style of J.S.Bach, trying to freely adapt a number of Baroque harmonic and contrapuntal procedures to the lyrical quality of operatic singing and Brazilian song.
The word chôro is Portuguese for "weeping", "cry", and came to be the name used for music played by an ensemble of Brazilian street musicians (called chorões) using both African and European instruments, who improvise in a free and often dissonant kind of counterpoint called contracanto.
Sexteto Místico was written for the unusual combination in the West: guitar, flute, alto saxophone, harp, horn and celesta. It was more the composition (with the exception of the celeste and harp), which the composer frequently encountered in the streets of his Rio de Janeiro and reminded him of the Choros. The celesta and harp would indicate impressionistic influences.

Programme notes
Piazzolla is considered one of the greatest latin american composers and performers. His work settled a new vision of tango in Argentina and around the world. His style is intertwined with his background from popular tango orchestras in the night life of Buenos Aires, and his classical education, studying in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. The pieces were written between 1965 and 1970, in which Piazzolla shares how the seasons are in his hometown. "porteño" is the demonym for the people from Buenos Aires, (Arg). Otoño (Autumn), it's constantly fluctuating between fast rhythms and mellow melodies. Invierno (Winter) offers a deep longing feeling. And Primavera (spring): fresh, impetuous, and energetic.
“...she (Nadia) taught me to believe in Piazzolla, that my music wasn’t as bad as I thought. I thought it was garbage because I played tangos in a cabaret, and it turns out that I had something called style”
Astor Piazzolla.

"War of the Romantics"
The "War of the Romantics" is a term used by some music historians to describe the schism among prominent musicians in the second half of the 19th century. Musical structure, the limits of chromatic harmony, and programme music versus absolute music were the principal areas of contention. The opposing parties crystallized during the 1850s. The most prominent members of the conservative circle were Johannes Brahms, Joseph Joachim, Clara Schumann, and the Leipzig Conservatoire, which had been founded by Felix Mendelssohn. Their opponents, the radical progressives mainly from Weimar, were represented by Franz Liszt and the members of the so-called New German School (German: Neudeutsche Schule), and by Richard Wagner. The controversy was German and Central European in origin; musicians from France, Italy, and Russia were only marginally involved.
Between the performed pieces, letters from the composers will be read to give an image of the relationship between them.

Ma mère l'Oye is a suite by French composer Maurice Ravel. The piece was originally written as a five-movement piano duet in 1910. In 1911, Ravel orchestrated the work. Both piano versions bear the subtitle "cinq pièces enfantines" (five children's pieces). Sleeping Beauty and Little Tom Thumb are based on the tales of Charles Perrault, while Little Ugly Girl, Empress of the Pagodas is inspired by a tale (The Green Serpent) by Perrault's "rival" Madame d'Aulnoy. Beauty and the Beast is based upon the version by Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont. The origin of The Fairy Garden is not entirely known, although the ballet version interprets this as Sleeping Beauty being awakened in the garden by her prince.
