Let’s learn, grow and move in music together! Experience concerts, masterclasses, lectures and more during the Chamber Music Festival!

Chamber music ensembles will be treated to an intense series of masterclasses with internationally renowned artists Shunske Sato (violin), Shuann Chai (piano & fortepiano) and Philippe Castejon(clarinet & chalumeau) during the Chamber Music Festival at Conservatorium Maastricht on 11 – 14 April 2023.

These experienced guest teachers and performers are versatile and can work on all style periods, but they will help the participating ensembles grow specifically in historical performance of Baroque and Classical style periods.

There will be a harpsichord and a fortepiano, which will offer ensembles with piano the chance to experience (new) opportunities and will help them deal with the effects of playing on period instruments.

Everybody is welcome to join the Chamber Music Festival and experience the students at work with these amazing guest teachers.

With Masterclasses by Philippe Castejon, Shuann Chai and Shunske Sato.

Philippe Castejon
Clarinet and basset horn

Since 1997 I have been working as a free-lance clarinettist in many European orchestras which are primarily devoted to historical performance practice. Among these are, for example, Concerto Köln, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Freiburger Barockorchester, Das Neue Orchester, die Cappella Coloniensis, Amsterdam Barok, Orchestre des Champs Elysées, and Anima Eterna Brugge. I have been on numerous concert tours of Europe, Japan, and the USA, and also participated in many radio and CD recordings for Deutsche Grammophon and Harmonia Mundi, among others. As a soloist I have recorded the six „Concerti con molti Strumenti“ by Vivaldi for the label Disques Pierre Verany, and the „Sinfonia Concertante“ by Josef Myslivecek for Deutsche Grammophon. Since 2006 I am publisher and sole editor of Castejon Music Editions. In 2018 the ensemble Caf´Conc´ was founded together with Fabienne Carlier (singer and accordeon player).

Shuann Chai
Piano & fortepiano

Shuann Chai is an active and engaging performer, recognised for her interpretations on a wide range of historical pianos as well as the modern piano.
She holds degrees from Oberlin College and the New England Conservatory (USA), while having the privilege of private studies with pianists such as Norma Fisher, Claus-Christian Schuster, and Anton Kuerti. As a soloist and chamber musician she has performed in the Kleine Zaal of the Concertgebouw, De Doelen, the Orlando Festival; Festival La Folle Journée, Suntory Hall (Japan); Bach en Combrailles, the American Church of Paris (France); Troldsalen (Norway), National Concert Hall (Taipei), St. Cecilia’s Hall (Edinburgh), Jordan Hall (Boston), and the Forbidden City Concert Hall (Beijing), to name but a few.

Future recording projects include a CD of songs by Schoenberg and Berg with contralto Noa Frenkel as well as a recording of Brahms's chamber music with violinist Shunske Sato and cellist Hidemi Suzuki. Among other things, Shuann Chai is grateful for having three inspiring musical companions: a concert grand Steinway signed by jazz legends Herbie Hancock and Ahmad Jamal; an original Érard piano (1861), and an original 1820 Rosenberger fortepiano, generously provided on permanent loan by the National Musical Instruments Foundation of the Netherlands (NMF).

Shunske Sato
Violin

Shunske Sato is a violinist known for his distinctive and engaging performances on both modern and historical instruments. Resident in the Netherlands, Shunske assumes the double role of artistic leader and concertmaster of the Netherlands Bach Society, and as concertmaster of Concerto Köln. Since 2013 he has been a faculty member of the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he teaches violin in the context of historical performance practice of eras ranging from baroque to early 20th-century. He has performed as soloist with American and European orchestras such as the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Bavarian Radio Philharmonic, and Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. His discography is extensive and most notably includes works for solo violin by Bach, Telemann, Paganini and Eugène Ysaÿe.

Born in Tokyo, Shunske immigrated to the US at the age of four.  He studied at the Juilliard School in New York, Conservatoire National de Région in Paris and Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich.  His teachers include Chin Kim, Dorothy DeLay, Masao Kawasaki, Gérard Poulet, Eiichi Chijiiwa and Mary Utiger.
