About Sun-Mi Hong
Born in South Korea and now based in Amsterdam, Sun-Mi Hong is a drummer celebrated for her innovative playing and creative approach to jazz. Her latest album, Fourth Page: Meaning of a Nest, released in March on Edition Records, showcases her inventive spirit and drive for musical exploration.
Founded in 2016, the Sun-Mi Hong Quintet (Nicolò Ricci – tenor saxophone, Alistair Payne – trumpet, Chaerin Im – piano, Alessandro Fongaro – bass) blends South Korean and European traditions while venturing into uncharted musical territory.
On the album, she explores themes of melancholy, innocence, and self-expression, resulting in compelling compositions such as Meaning of a Nest and Toddler's Eye. Sun-Mi Hong masterfully combines complex structures with improvisation, and in live performance, she takes audiences on an emotional journey—her quintet sings, embraces, cries, and constantly surprises.
