We are delighted to share some exciting news about Arjan Tien: he has been appointed Chief Conductor of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra from 1 January 2026 and this summer also became Associate Professor at Stellenbosch University. These appointments are independent of each other, making this double recognition particularly special.
Tien is internationally praised for his refined style, energy, and attention to detail. In addition to his new roles, he continues as Artistic Supervisor of the South African Conductors’ Competition and teaches at Conservatorium van Amsterdam and Conservatorium Maastricht.
As a sought-after guest conductor, he has worked with orchestras and opera houses worldwide, including the Noord Nederlands Orkest, WDR Funkhausorchester (Cologne), Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera Zuid, and the Dutch Touring Opera. Later this year, he will conduct Mahler’s Ninth Symphony with the combined conservatory orchestras of Aachen, Liège and Maastricht. More info here.
We are proud that he is part of the teaching team at Conservatorium Maastricht, contributing his experience and expertise to the next generation of musicians.
