How can music education be made accessible for students with disabilities? Within the Music in Education programme at Conservatorium Maastricht, students have the opportunity to specialise in this field through the graduation track Orthopedagogical Music Practitioner (OMB). This OMB specialisation is unique in the Netherlands and is offered exclusively at the Music in Education programme at Conservatorium Maastricht.
In a recent article by Méér Muziek in de Klas, Felix Havenith, head of the Music Education programme, and Yolande Eymael, OMB lecturer for 25 years, explain the unique character of this specialisation. Students not only acquire the necessary knowledge and skills, but above all develop the right attitude to truly support learners with disabilities.
The OMB specialisation within Music Education focuses on teaching people with a mental or physical disability, or with learning difficulties. Making music is central, always combined with attention to personal development, self-confidence and social connectedness.
OMB is a popular graduation track: more than half of Music Education students choose it during their studies. Alumni find their way into both specialised and mainstream education, where their broad skill set and sensitive approach make a real difference.
After 25 years at Conservatorium Maastricht, Yolande Eymael recently handed over to lecturers Renée Steenvoorden and Maureen Poell. Maureen has long been connected as a pedagogy lecturer and will, together with Renée, further shape the specialisation, building on the strong foundation laid over the past decades.
