Márton Kereszturi, a fourth-year Electronic Music Performance student at the Conservatorium Maastricht, is an inspiring student. As the lead composer of the recent feature film ONE MORE LIKE, he blends his classical piano foundation with contemporary electronic influences. His unique musical journey, from classical and jazz to film composition, demonstrates how versatility and passion can lead to impressive international recognition.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Márton Kereszturi, and I am a fourth-year Electronic Music Performance student at the Conservatorium Maastricht, as well as the principal composer of the feature film ONE MORE LIKE. My musical journey began as a classical pianist, after which I started composing my own pop piano pieces. Encouraged by Bob Leone, former National Projects Director of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, I decided to pursue a career in film music. Although I initially studied International Business Economics, my passion for film music remained strong. During my studies, I also discovered jazz, which greatly broadened my musical horizons, but I was encouraged the most by Karoly Palfai, who truly believed in me from the start and gave me opportunities to work in his films. To date, I have composed music for several of his films, including AIR HUNGER and the critically acclaimed short film BOUND LEGS

In the Spotlight – Márton Kereszturi

Why did you choose the Conservatorium Maastricht?
Originally, I intended to study in the United States, but due to the pandemic, I opted for the Netherlands, closer to my hometown of Budapest. I began with jazz piano at another Dutch conservatory but soon realised I wanted to focus on electronic music and production, which led me to Maastricht. I greatly value the conservatory’s international atmosphere and the cultural exchange with fellow students.

How has your study influenced your approach to film music?
The programme in Maastricht encourages a lot of independent study, which suits me well. Thanks to tutors like Freddy Tings, Jesse Passenier, and Sam Wamper, I have been able to develop my skills significantly. This also helped me gain admission to the Pre-Master at Musicube Academy before I had even completed my bachelor's degree. The freedom and quality of education here are truly exceptional.

Tell us about your career so far
Since 2019, I have been closely collaborating with a director on his films. Our short film BOUND LEGS won seven international awards for my music, and the TV film AIR HUNGER received an Honourable Mention at the Accolade Global Film Competition. Our latest feature film, ONE MORE LIKE, for which I served as lead composer and producer, recently premiered on Hungarian national television. Despite a limited budget, we managed to produce a professional score with a small team.
Besides, we were recently awarded in California at the Accolades competition for the score and five other awards, alongside films by Oscar-winning global stars, including a documentary directed by Tilda Swinton and another produced by Jane Fonda and Gustavo Santaolalla. More details can be found on this Facebook page.

What inspired you when composing for ONE MORE LIKE?
I received the script well in advance of filming, which gave me ample time to craft the musical atmosphere. The themes of social media and online sexual platforms called for a fresh electronic sound with synth and trap influences. Together with my co-composer Áron Ipsics, we created strong melodies. Adam Takács and Kata Bóta contributed impressive end titles, and the band La Movida Cuba provided authentic dance tracks. My education, including studies with Paul from the legendary Tangerine Dream, has greatly shaped my electronic style.

What advice do you have for aspiring film composers?
I am still learning myself, but at Soundtrack Cologne, I received valuable advice from renowned composers like Gustavo Santaolalla: know yourself, set your ego aside, and support the director’s vision. This sounds simple but is a considerable challenge. What I was told is that if you truly love film music and are dedicated to it, success is ultimately inevitable.

With his distinctive sound and dedication, Márton has established himself in a competitive industry. His experience offers insight for young composers interested in film music. We look forward to seeing the projects he will undertake in the future. We thank Márton for his time and contribution to this interview and wish him success in his upcoming endeavors.
