The Soul of Strings: Learning, Reflecting, and Performing Together

1 October 2025

On October 10, the stage of Conservatorium Maastricht will be filled with the vibrant sounds of Strings. Under the guidance of our string faculty members Mihai Cocea and Hiroyuki Yamazaki, students embark on a musical journey that is as much about growth and reflection as it is about performance.

A Threefold Learning Process
For Mihai, the rehearsal process begins long before the first note is played together. Drawing from his experience, he describes the learning process in three stages:

Personal independence: “Students and teachers arrive at the first rehearsal well-prepared, with a clear understanding of what to play, who they share the melody with, and their role within the piece.”

Collaborative learning: Rehearsing as an ensemble, shaping the piece together, and addressing issues of intonation, balance, and rhythm.

Personal reflection: “Each of us reflects on our own contribution: how we can sound better individually, and how we can fit even more seamlessly into the orchestra. Ultimately, our goal is to create a cohesive and harmonious sound that sounds like one.”

A Diverse and Inspiring Programme
The repertoire for this project brings together three contrasting composers. Mihai reflects: “In my opinion, this programme showcases Mozart’s graciousness and poise, Hindemith’s stillness and gravity, and culminates in a radiant outpouring with Tchaikovsky.”
For Hiroyuki, the richness of the programme also lies in what it offers students technically and musically:
“I believe that all the technical and musical fundamentals for us string players lie in the works of Mozart and Haydn – harmony, articulation, phrasing. Above all, I hope that through the lively and joyful Divertimento, those skills will be enriched.”
When it comes to Tchaikovsky, Hiroyuki adds: “His music is so full of passion, sentimentality, and romanticism. What I hope to achieve is to find a direction where we can all unite emotionally in our performance.”
“This programme is exceptionally diverse. All three pieces are truly luxurious sources of inspiration. I am especially looking forward to playing and hearing Mihai’s solo performance, it is a privilege to share the stage with a colleague who is currently active with top orchestras.”

Developing Both Voice and Technique
Beyond the notes, Mihai emphasizes the importance of interpretative growth: “For me, the most important artistic aspect is to help students develop their own voice, while also being part of a larger system. This encourages them to question and reflect on the work they are currently playing and practising.”
He also highlights the technical challenge of the project: “The most important skill is to be able to change the atmosphere, styling, and dynamic contrast to fit the distinct styles of each composer. While this is a Herculean task, I am confident that we will work hard and make it sound marvellous.”

Experience The Soul of Strings
The Soul Strings Orchestra is more than a concert, it is a journey of learning, reflection, and artistic growth. By bringing together the grace of Mozart, the gravity of Hindemith, and the passion of Tchaikovsky, this project invites both performers and audience into a deeply moving musical experience.
